The winter months are upon us and with winter comes frightful skin dryness and irritation. This winter instead of just watching your skin lose its luster and shine, try combating the effects of winter weather on your skin.

Cold, dry air is harmful to the skin's natural oils. By getting enough sleep, moisturizing, exfoliating, hydrating and keeping the skin sweat free, we can stop winter weather skin breakdown.

Not only do our bodies need a sufficient amount of sleep, so does our skin. Sleep in general allows the body to rejuvenate and repair. Without enough sleep, the skin will grow haggard and dry. Six to eight hours of restful sleep, can and will improve the look and condition of the skin, as well as, all other body functions.

What rest can not do is rehydrate the skin. Moisturizers are great for adding moisture to, and keeping moisture in the skin. It is important to apply a moisturizer all over the body immediately after toweling off. The oils in the lotion will trap any residual water in the skin, naturally increasing the skin's hydration. It is also very important to make sure your skin lotion contains sunscreen. Sunscreen levels of SPF 15 or more should be used year round, not just during the summer months.

Our skin naturally sheds layers constantly. Due to the low humidity levels during winter months, this shedding becomes more prevalent and noticeable. While this is not harmful to the skin, it can lead to scaly and pealing patches, especially on the face. A weekly exfoliation of the top layer of facial skin, will help to bring back the radiance and luster that winter months take away.

While moisturizers work wonders for skin hydration, nothing is better than hydrating from within. During winter months, consuming more than 64 fluid ounces of water a day will bring new life to the skin. We must remember that water is just that, water. There are no substitutes for the health benefits water brings the body, so the 64 fluid ounces of water should be in addition to any other fluids you are drinking.

Winter months are usually cold and barren. But, sweating is one of the main irritants to the skin during the winter months. To stop the skin from sweating, dress in multiple layers. This will allow you to peel off layers of clothing when needed and reapply as you like.

Taking care of your skin during the winter months, is as important as summer skin care. Low humidity levels cause skin dryness and peeling, while sweating may irritate. Follow these simple five tips for winter skin care and you will jump into spring with lustrous radiant skin.
